Information sharing is critical in a learning organization more so than efficient performance organizations because of the overall company goals and metrics. In efficient performance organizations, the core concept is to perform efficiently and effectively by decreasing errors and increasing unit output. If there is a better way to do so, the organization will make every attempt to succeed each and every time there needs to be an improvement.
The learning organization is a popular organization development initiative. Advocates of the learning organization suggest that organizations can improve long-term effectiveness by creating a system that maximizes learning at the individual, team, and organizational levels. Learning organizations have these key characteristics: individuals and teams that work toward the attainment of linked and shared goals; open communication, with information available and shared; systems thinking as the norm (Swanson & Holton, 1999). In addition to sharing information in this structure, managers are to be the leaders of learning and collaboration and to welcome new ideas.
